Medicare Advantage Insurance Plans

Medicare Advantage (MA), or Part C plans, were introduced in their first form in the 1970s. MA plans are private company insurance plans that contract with Medicare to manage Medicare recipients’ healthcare. MA plans generally have very low premiums, in part because members pay a portion of each Medical service they receive. By law, all MA plans are at least as comprehensive as original Medicare, and generally include drug coverage as well, so they are quite good. Most MA plans also have a cap or limit on how much a member would have to spend in a given year.

If you are considering an MA plan, it's important to know the different types of plan options before you explore a specific MA plan from any individual company. There are four major types of plans: HMOs, PPOs, PFFS, and MSA. The chart below describes some important differences between these plans. Knowing what's important to you will help you select an appropriate plan for your needs. To learn more about each of these plans, simply click on the box for the plan you think might meet your needs.

Why do people join MA plans?

People join MA plans for a variety or reasons, but the primary two reasons are cost savings and protection. The head of Medicare, Mark McClellan, recently stated that people save an average of $86 a month (about $1,000 a year) by enrolling in a Part C plan. In addition, MA plans protect people against uncapped medical costs. A third reason people join MA plans is because they often include extra services, like an annual physical or vision checks, which aren't included in Original Medicare. Finally, MAs are generally considered easy to use, with very little paperwork.
