Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB) Plan

If you have coverage through a Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB) plan, you will only want to consider Original Medicare and health insurance if they are more advantageous to you than FEHB. The question to ask yourself, and your retirement coordinator, is what each option will cover and what the total costs will be.

Generally, FEHB plans help pay for the same kind of expenses as Medicare. FEHB plans also provide coverage for prescription drugs, routine physicals, emergency care outside of the United States, and some preventive services Original Medicare doesn't cover, but many Medicare Advantage plans do cover. Some FEHB plans also provide coverage for dental and vision care.

Medicare covers some orthopedic and prosthetic devices, durable medical equipment, home health care, limited chiropractic services, and medical supplies, which some FEHB plans may not cover or only partially cover.
